Since 1935, when president Alfonso López Pumarejo, through his government program "Ongoing Revolution", decided to make a modernizing leap in colombian higher education, the Universidad Nacional has been a paradigm and model for the rest of Nation's universities.
One of the standing points of that reform was dispose of what was required to create the University City, carefully designed by the german architects Leopoldo Rother and Fritz Karsen.
Such Campus, knowns also as the White City, is located in Capital's Downtown and gathers students of all country's regions. Nevertheless the national nature of the Insititution, has made it to have eight more campuses: three andenean in Medellín, Manizales and Palmira, and five on borders at Amazonas, Caribbean, Orinoco, Tumaco and De la Paz, consolidating a student population of 50,000 (41,500 on undergraduate and 8,500 on postgraduate), number that historically has represented between 9% and 12% of the total of students signed in public universities.
UNAL is the only option for young colombians that wants to enter to higher education system. Therefore 86% of the undergraduate students, belongs to the social strata 1, 2 and 3, beside, 2,927 students of indigenous, afro-colombia, palequero, raizal and outstanding high school graduate students of the most vulnerable regions of the country are benefited by the programs of Special Admission PAES and PEAMA. This last program allows the students begin their professional formation in border campuses and then promotes their moving to andenean campuses. In the same way, is paid special attention to people in disability condition and as a transversal axis, the gender equality policy is applied.
Diversity of the undergraduate and postgraduate programs and its inderdisciplinary focus represents one of the strengths of the University, major national reference in the knowledge generation. Currently, UNAL offers 94 undergraduate programs (83% with Quality Higher Accreditation) and 329 postgraduate progams (26% accredited in the country) distributed as: 56 doctorates, 152 masters, 83 specializations, and 38 medical specializations. This offer makes it as the Institution with most Masters and Doctorate progrms in Colombia.
Professors' profiles and their expertise is other factor that ensures the high quality level f the Insittution. UNAL has a teaching staff of 2,916 professors, which among them 1,169 has doctoral studies, 1,118 masters studies and 217 medical specialities.
In 2010, the Accreditation National Council (CNA), attached to national Education Ministry, gave to Universidad Nacional, the institutional Accreditation for 10 years, the maximum period given to a higher education institution, for its efforts in achieve higher quality levels in its academic programs and for improving its management processes, functioning and complying with its social function.
Through Academic Vicerectory and University's Welfare, since 2010, UNAl set the Student Accompaniment System, which is founded in the liberties, opportunities and individual differences of each student to monitor the adaptation to university life, academic performance, extracurricular activities, economical situationm physic and mental health, among others, for the purpose of redesign policies the improve their quality of life.
This system is one of the actions set to engage onto academic dropout that anually in UNAL is 6.31%, percentage inferior to 9% projected by National Education Ministry for 2014.
